Membership Application

Instructions

ASJA's Associate and Professional applications are the same. 

Complete this application if: 

  • You are applying for associate or professional membership and have never been an ASJA member. 
  • You are applying for professional membership and are currently an associate member. 

Associate membership applicants will be charged $159* for yearly dues, plus a $25 non-refundable application fee. If the application review committee determines that you qualify for associate membership, you will be granted associate membership through 12/31/2026. If the application review committee determines that you do not qualify, you will be reimbursed for $159.

If you apply for associate membership and the application review committee determines that you qualify for professional membership, you will be notified via email. If you would like to move forward with having your membership approved at the professional level, reply to that notification to accept. You will be invoiced for the $20 difference in dues to activate your professional membership.

Professional membership applicants will be charged $179* for yearly dues, plus a $25 non-refundable application fee. If the application review committee determines that you qualify for professional membership, you will be granted professional membership through 12/31/2026. If the application review committee determines that you do not qualify, you will be reimbursed for $179.

*NEW MEMBER PROMO* Applicants who apply between July-October 2026 can receive 50% off the yearly dues, plus the non-refundable $25 application fee. See instructions below for applying the promo code when completing your application. If you apply the correct code, your dues amount will be recalculated (reduced by 50%). If your membership is application is approved, your membership will be activated through 12/31/2026.

Professional membership is for writers with established freelance writing careers that include at least one published book and/or national clips. Professional ASJA members can access Client Connections, Virtual Pitch Slam or Virtual Client Connections. Note: newly independent former staff writers and editors from established media companies are eligible for professional membership with no waiting period.

Associate membership is offered to mid-level freelance writers, who would like to become professional members. Writers currently working on staff at a media company can join ASJA at this membership level.
