Description

Journalist Melanie Kaplan, winner of ASJA’s general nonfiction book award in 2026, will talk about marketing and promoting Lab Dog: A Beagle and His Human Investigate the Surprising World of Animal Research, her first book. Kaplan, a long-time freelancer, has set up more than 70 events in her book’s first year and has even become an effective (if not reluctant) social media user. She will cover the importance of building and working your network long before your book comes out, how to get the most out of your publisher's marketing and promotion team, tricks for planning a great book event, how to be the author every bookstore wants to host, why it’s never too early to think about spinoff articles, and how to plan a book tour on a shoestring budget.
